A UK Debt Management Association

The main UK debt management association is called DEMSA.

These initials stand for the Debt Managers Standards Association. As with any other trade association, DEMSA is promoting high standards of treatment, ethics and compliance for clients by members. This is a noble aim.

Founded in December 2000, DEMSA aims to protect the interests of both individual clients and the lenders involved.

Rather worringly (for the UK consumer), DEMSA has very few member firms. This is more likely to be a reflection on the debt industry in Britain rather than the group themselves.

All this shows that the UK debt management association world is still very young and needs time to grow, mature and prosper. In the meantime, whilst waiting, should you need a debt management firm in the UK, the members of DEMSA are very likely to be the type of organisations that you would want to be involved with. It might be reassuring to know that DEMSA members have a separate Complaints and Redress procedure to protect clients. An independent overseer is something that the UK debt industry needs far more of, in my humble opinion.
