Can You Get A Free Credit Score In The UK?

Can you find the information out yourself and is a free credit score available?

You will be pleased to learn that the credit referencing agencies do allow you, the individual, to find out about your own rating. If you are hoping to borrow at some point in the near future and are unsure of how you and your finances rate, this is an ideal way to get started.

Depending upon where you are in the world, it may be possible to arrange a free credit score, otherwise you will need to pay a small fee. For example, in the UK, that fee is around just £2.

Whether you can get a free credit score or you need to pay for it, it will be very useful in helping you to understand whether a lender will want you as a customer. If you are in doubt, it will also make it easier for you to decide upon what action to take to improve your rating.

For example, it may be that you have a loan in default from some time ago. Most lenders will view this with horror. However, if your finances are in a better position now, it may be wise to contact the lender and make an arrangement to repay all or a portion of that loan. Once this is done, many lenders will view this as being a little more honourable and reliable. They will likely take the view that you were in spot of bother, but once back on your feet, you paid your way. Making up for past problems is a sure way to impress most lenders.

Your rating, when it arrives in the post will be a jumble of numbers which unless you try hard will be meaningless to you. To understand these numbers, it is important to carefully study the explanation that accompanies your free credit score. In truth, these documents are relatively simple to follow - if you try.

As a mortgage adviser, I have had more people than I care to count bring me their credit rating and tell me they could not understand it. I would ask them for the 'other document' and often they would not have even opened or tried to understand the details provided.

With just a small amount of effort, you should be able to understand yours.
