Can you get debt management quotations?

As mentioned in the last page debt management fees it can be difficult to find or arrange information in advance of meeting advisers. This is for several reasons ... one being that finance is very individual, every person has unique circumstances which makes almost every financial decision unique.

However, as I mentioned, financial people, even in the debt industry have to earn a living too. If they just gave out quotes over the telephone, they would never win any business.

Of course if they did give out debt management quotations by phone, they would always be wrong. In my experience, people are simply not honest with an adviser. This is true throughout all of finance.

Members of the public either overstate the positive aspects of their finances (if they have some money, they tell you that they have much more) or understate their debts. Both of these are simply to make them feel better about their situation, but they severly hinder the work of any financial professional.

Since almost anyone who works in finance will know this, they will be very unwilling to offer guidance or debt management quotations over the telephone. They simply know that these quotes will not be of much use to the vast majority of people who call. Therefore why waste the effort and postage?

This might sound cynical, but trust me that my experience shows this is true. When I was employed in the estate agency industry as a financial adviser, we had a saying - 'Buyers are liars'. That might sound harsh and it did to me at first, but over time you come to realise the truth of the situation.

Once you are sat face to face with an adviser, it is highly likely that you will be able to get debt management quotations and if you wish, be able to take them away and assess them in your own time. If you can do this, good for you! Take the opportunity.
